We are happy to see the Environmental Commissioners Office (ECO) report today that highlights several important issues tied to our mandate.
The report discusses:
- Guelph’s precious groundwater resources, and the need to protect them from unsustainable yet regulated growth in this region (under the Places to Grow Act)
- our 8200 comments on the Environmental Registry opposing Nestle’s Permit to Take Water
- the need to prioritize drinking water needs over those of the private sector, particularly water bottling, in times of low water (drought)
- increasing bulk water taking fees, from the current 1-cent per 3000 litres, to cover conservation program costs
