Why is Guelph’s Tap Water better than Bottled Water?

It costs over 1,000 times less than bottled water, and is delivered to a tap near you.

Flavoured bottled water often has potassium sorbate added as a preservative. This absorbs UV light and interferes with waste water treatment.

Guelph’s tap water comes from the same aquifer as Nestlé Pure Life Aberfoyle water.

Tap water is chlorinated. Bottled water is ozonated. If you leave them in a pitcher in the fridge overnight so the ozone and chlorine evaporate off they should be identical.

The Ontario Provincial Government has proposed a law to control water transfers out of the 3 watersheds in Ontario. There is an exemption for bottled water in containers less than 20 litres. Please use the sample comment below to state your objection at the Ontario Environmental Registry web site.

I am opposed to the section of Bill 198 that deals with exemptions to water transfers out of the originating watershed, Section 34.3 (3).1. This section exempts transfers of containers having a volume of 20 litres or less. However, I see no difference between a truck

We are closely monitoring the developments regarding increased water-taking at the River Valley Developments Inc. (the Dolime site) just west of Guelph. Their proposal is to increase the tonnes of aggregate removed. If the MNR (Ministry of Natural Resources) approves the increase in tonnage, there will be a renewed need to increase the water taking (there have been two previous notices on the environmental registry about the permit to take water which have been withdrawn). An increase in the water taking to get to the bedrock for quarrying… Read the rest

The Wellington Water Watcher’s presence at this year’s Hillside Festival was a huge success. We commend the efforts of the Board of Hillside as well as The City of Guelph for partnering on this project to offer free water at this year’s festival. Thanks to all who stopped by and to all those smiling volunteers who helped out. It was a very satisfying experience to quench the thirst of thousands! It turned out to be major news that the festival made a concerted effort to drastically reduce the use of bottled water. Over 18,000 litres of clean, safe tap water… Read the rest

They currently have a permit to draw 3.6 million litres/day from Aberfoyle and 1.1 million litres/day from Hillsburgh (or about 260 Hillside Festivals every day!).

With our encouragement, over 8200 letters of objection to the permit renewal were sent to the Ministry of the Environment.
