Walk For Water 102km

Join Shane Philips and friends who will “Walk for Water” on Saturday Oct. 1 and Sunday Oct. 2, 2011, from Guelph to Queen’s Park to deliver the message that water is not a commodity. Walkers will depart at 8:00 am from Planet Bean south (1467 Gordon – Planet Bean is generously offering a free drink to all walkers!) Protection of aquifer should be election priority

There is much local interest in the Melancthon Township Mega Quarry, and there are many protests planned to put an end to this insane idea.
However, one issue that is not receiving enough attention in this provincial election in Guelph is the threat to the safety of our own water supply. One of the biggest  threats to our pristine groundwater is from the Dolime quarry. This quarry’s current licence allows its owners to extract material to a prescribed legal depth limit, and therein lies the problem.

Canada’s first Tree Day is Wednesday September 21st.   

It will always be on the Wednesday in the middle of Forestry Week . This year, in honour of the occasion we have a photo contest that we told you about in June. There are only three weeks left as it ends on Oct 8th. Then the winners will be announced in November and we will have a celebration for them as we finish our participation in the International Year of the Forest.

I am aware, through conversations with Mike Darmon, that Wellington Water Watchers has a continuing concern with the potential threat to water quality posed by proposed removal of a portion of the aquitard that overlies the Gasport aquifer at the (former) Guelph Dolime Quarry. I share this concern.
