Concerns about the Proposed Dolime Management Plan and Aquitard Protection

Memo To: Wellington Water Watchers

From: Hugh Whiteley P. Eng.

Date: August 10 2011

RE: OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVED PROTECTION OF GROUNDWATER IN ONTARIO

Background
I am aware, through conversations with Mike Darmon, that Wellington Water Watchers has a continuing concern with the potential threat to water quality posed by proposed removal of a portion of the aquitard that overlies the Gasport aquifer at the (former) Guelph Dolime Quarry. I share this concern. I find that the approach to-date of the Ontario Government to management of the quarry operations, as regards the protection of water quality in the aquifer, is inadequate… Read the rest

Mon Aug 15 2011

http://www.guelphmercury.com/news/local/article/578784–guelph-granted-extension-for-quarry-comments

GUELPH — The City of Guelph has been granted extra time to comment on an application to double the extraction rate at a local quarry.

The city had asked the province to extend the commenting period on the four-year-old application in a July 26 letter alleging the license represents an “assault on the safety of Guelph’s drinking water.”

A subsequent letter from the Ministry of Natural Resources seemed to suggest the extension would not be granted.

But on Monday, the office of MPP Liz Sandals circulated a press release in which Sandals was given

Our letter to the editor in response to the mercury article on Dolime

Sent to the Guelph Mercury on August 12,2011.
If the Earth was flat instead of round, and all the surface layers were of uniform thickness ,life would be a lot simpler for the operators of the Dolime quarry .But alas the Earth is round and layers are uneven as was made clear when the Ontario Geological Survey specialist in Southern Ontario aquifers visited the quarry several years ago. .Guelph obtains most of it’s water from the Gasport aquifer,a rock layer with lots of tiny and not so tiny spaces and fractures that store and transmit water.

Guelph’s mayor has been in touch with the Ministry of Natural Resources over concerns that the city’s water supply is being threatened by an application to double extraction limits at the DoLime Quarry.
“Operation of the quarry under the proposed Management Plan would present a threat to the city’s water supply and therefore a threat to the health of Guelph citizens and visitors,” said Mayor Karen Farbridge in a recent letter to the ministry.
The letter was in regards to a July 2007 application to amend the licence
