Protection of aquifer should be election priority

There is much local interest in the Melancthon Township Mega Quarry, and there are many protests planned to put an end to this insane idea.
However, one issue that is not receiving enough attention in this provincial election in Guelph is the threat to the safety of our own water supply. One of the biggest  threats to our pristine groundwater is from the Dolime quarry. This quarry’s current licence allows its owners to extract material to a prescribed legal depth limit, and therein lies the problem.
Guelph relies almost 100 per cent  on ground water, as opposed to… Read the rest

September 2, 2011-  The Council of Canadians is cautiously optimistic about the announcement by Ontario’s Minister of the Environment, John Wilkinson, that a proposed mega-quarry in Melancthon Township will be required to submit an Environmental Assessment. “More than 130,000 people have called on this government to reject the mega-quarry outright but Minister Wilkinson’s decision is the next best thing” said Maude Barlow, Chair of the Board of the Council of Canadians. “The… Read the rest

Guelph granted extension for quarry comments

Mon Aug 15 2011

http://www.guelphmercury.com/news/local/article/578784–guelph-granted-extension-for-quarry-comments

GUELPH — The City of Guelph has been granted extra time to comment on an application to double the extraction rate at a local quarry.

The city had asked the province to extend the commenting period on the four-year-old application in a July 26 letter alleging the license represents an “assault on the safety of Guelph’s drinking water.”

A subsequent letter from the Ministry of Natural Resources seemed to suggest the extension would not be granted.

But on Monday, the office of MPP Liz Sandals circulated a press release in which Sandals was given

Our letter to the editor in response to the mercury article on Dolime

Sent to the Guelph Mercury on August 12,2011.
If the Earth was flat instead of round, and all the surface layers were of uniform thickness ,life would be a lot simpler for the operators of the Dolime quarry .But alas the Earth is round and layers are uneven as was made clear when the Ontario Geological Survey specialist in Southern Ontario aquifers visited the quarry several years ago. .Guelph obtains most of it’s water from the Gasport aquifer,a rock layer with lots of tiny and not so tiny spaces and fractures that store and transmit water.

Guelph’s mayor has been in touch with the Ministry of Natural Resources over concerns that the city’s water supply is being threatened by an application to double extraction limits at the DoLime Quarry.
“Operation of the quarry under the proposed Management Plan would present a threat to the city’s water supply and therefore a threat to the health of Guelph citizens and visitors,” said Mayor Karen Farbridge in a recent letter to the ministry.
The letter was in regards to a July 2007 application to amend the licence

Chong Opposes Mega-Quarry in House of Commons
Chong requests a Federal Environmental Assessment and a Panel Review

OTTAWA – Michael Chong, M.P. for Wellington-Halton Hills, voiced opposition to the
Highland Companies’ mega-quarry in the House of Commons today.  At 2,500 acres, the
proposed mega-quarry in Dufferin County would be one of the largest open-pit mines in
Canada, destroying prime farmland and natural habitat for local flora and fauna.  By delving
more than 200 feet below the surface, it… Read the rest
