James Gordon’s Statement on the DoLime Quarry
We must act now to ensure Guelph’s water security.
As co-founder of the Wellington Water Watchers, I worked with thousands of other Guelphites to oppose water-taking by Nestlé from our aquifer, and raise the issue about the threat to our water supply resulting from quarries in our area. I’ve been working for over 30 years to educate youth about our climate and how we need to protect the air we breathe, the land on which we live, and the water we drink.
The DoLime quarry is situated within two kilometres of eight of the City of Guelph’s water… Read the rest
Open Letter to Editors – Vote for Water
Vote for Water?
With the October 6 provincial election just around the corner, how can we engage in a meaningful political debate about subjects that really matter, but generally fly under the radar?
We hear a lot about jobs, health care and education – all very important – but what about the precious elements that underpin the web of life on which we all depend? Air, soil and climate – for example.
And what about water?
The world-renowned American hydrologist Luna Leopold once said: “The health of our waters is the principal measure of how we live on the land.”… Read the rest

Protection of aquifer should be election priority
There is much local interest in the Melancthon Township Mega Quarry, and there are many protests planned to put an end to this insane idea.
However, one issue that is not receiving enough attention in this provincial election in Guelph is the threat to the safety of our own water supply. One of the biggest threats to our pristine groundwater is from the Dolime quarry. This quarry’s current licence allows its owners to extract material to a prescribed legal depth limit, and therein lies the problem.
Guelph relies almost 100 per cent on ground water, as opposed to… Read the rest

Hey Friends.
Most of us know how precious this resource is and have been waiting for the opportunity to make a difference in our own lives and the lives of others. As children and families in struggling countries walk for water everyday just to meet the minimal requirements of life, I along side friends, family and other passionate individuals will walk from Guelph Ontario to Queens Park in Toronto to deliver a message to the MOE. Stop the commodification of water. Reduce bottled water consumption by tapping into
Concerns about the Proposed Dolime Management Plan and Aquitard Protection
Memo To: Wellington Water Watchers
From: Hugh Whiteley P. Eng.
Date: August 10 2011
RE: OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVED PROTECTION OF GROUNDWATER IN ONTARIO
Background
I am aware, through conversations with Mike Darmon, that Wellington Water Watchers has a continuing concern with the potential threat to water quality posed by proposed removal of a portion of the aquitard that overlies the Gasport aquifer at the (former) Guelph Dolime Quarry. I share this concern. I find that the approach to-date of the Ontario Government to management of the quarry operations, as regards the protection of water quality in the aquifer, is inadequate… Read the rest
