The submission should focus on:

  1. Where does our drinking water come from and how might we best preserve this resource for future generations? Explore water cycles, municipal systems, aquifer and groundwater profiling.
  2. How much does our water cost – financially, environmentally, socially? A comparison between tap water and bottled water or juice made with tap water versus juice boxes, the phenomenal waste generated by plastic bottles as well as the tremendous water wastage for producing plastic, full cost accounting.
  3. How essential is water to life on this planet – and specifically to our species, and how might we best protect this resource? Unique properties of water that sustain life, ours and other cultures’ perspective of the value of water, water as a common good

Students– we encourage you or your team (with the permission of your team sponsor) to take on an some aspect of water you are passionate about, and have fun!

All participants must submit their application form by February 26, 2010

Submission Closing Date

All participants must submit a photo or video of their piece by March 12, 2010. Please also include any specific requirements needed to display your submission. This will allow us to create the necessary display space and the necessary stage support that might be required at the River Run Centre.

Submission contestants must

  • Be from a high school in Wellington County (in grades 9 – 12)
  • Be either an individual or in a collaborative team from the same high school
  • Have a team sponsor who is a full-time staff member from your school who can provide consent from school administration to participate
  • Fill out the application form and submit by email at wellingtonwaterwatchers@gmail.com or by February 26, 2010

Create your submission

  • If your entry is a piece of artwork or a written piece, submit a description, including dimensions and a photo of your entry. Please also list any other support that will be required to display your artwork on Water Day – to wellingtonwaterwatchers@gmail.com by March 12, 2010.
  • If your entry is a performance piece, submit a video of the submission and any technical support that might be required to showcase your entry on Water Day – to wellingtonwaterwatchers@gmail.com by March 12, 2010.

All submissions must

  • Contain only original material ( may not contain any copyrighted material that you have not obtained the right to use, including photos, artwork, music, video clips, voices, etc.)
  • NOT infringe or violate the rights of any third party — permission, licenses, releases, and waivers must be obtained from any third party (including, but not limited to all copyright holders, and all individuals appearing the submission) and any and all permissions, licenses, releases, and waivers must be sent in to Wellington Water Watchers when submitting your piece.
  • NOT contain offensive language, gestures, or behaviour
  • If the submission is a performance piece, it must be less than five-minutes long (pieces longer than five minutes will be disqualified). The exception here is theatre pieces that can be up to 10 minutes in length.
  • All performance pieces must be submitted as a video in .AVI or .MPG format
  • We will try and accommodate all performances pieces such that they can be performed live on Water Day. Some limitations may happen due to technical requirements, in which case we will show your submitted video.
  • All entrants must be ready to showcase their submission on Monday March 22. Display pieces should be delivered to the River Run Centre by noon on Monday March 22, 2010. All performance pieces will be required to be stage ready according to the schedule designed after the March 12th deadline.

All submissions will be reviewed by an external panel of judges. From the compiled submissions, several entries will be selected to form our touring “Water Festival”.

Submissions will be judged on:

  • Articulation of Water issue (30 points)
  • Creativity (20 points)
  • Clarity of ideas and vision (20 points)
  • Technical or artistic expertise (10 points)
  • Suggestion of how to protect or conserve our water (20 points)

sticker

Some schools are running their own sticker design competition to select the design that will be used to represent your school. Please check with your schools environment club contact to know if your school is participating and to know deadlines. The sticker design that is selected will be included with all of our Message in the Bottle, stainless steel bottles delivered at your school.

The stickers need to be:

  • 2 inches by 4 inches – either the vertical or the horizontal layout
  • design can be with unlimited number of colours but 4 or 5 colours are recommended

The printing company we will be working with to print the designs on waterproof vinyl stock, have indicated that they can work with hand drawings/paintings as long as they can be scanned or reproduced digitally. However, if someone wishes to make the design in electronic form the following recommendations apply:

  • Design should be at 300dpi for better printing result
  • Design format should be Ai, PDF, PSD, EPS
  • Design should be made by the CMYK or pantone colors
  • Use of gradient or half tone of color minimum in design file
